The Spanish Tragedie is an Elizabethan play written by Thomas Kyd in or around 1588. This play and Kyd’s
lost “Ur Hamlet” play are said to be Shakespeare’s primary influences for his own Hamlet. Many elements
of The Spanish Tragedie, such as the play within a play used to trap a murderer, a ghost intent on
vengeance, and a hero driven to madness, appear in Shakespeare's revenge play.

Highly popular and influential in its time, The Spanish Tragedie established a new genre in English drama,
the revenge play. Its plot contains several violent murders and includes as one of its characters a
personification of Revenge. The Spanish Tragedie was often referenced in works written by other
Elizabethan playwrights including William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Christopher Marlowe.

"Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord.
The Heavens will be revenged of every ill,
Nor will they suffer murder unrepaid!
For evils to evils conductors be,
And death's the worst resolution."
