Molière's classic comedy is an insightful examination of hypocrisy and gullibility. Tartuffe, a humble religious ascetic, has come to stay at the home of a wealthy family. Orgon, along with his mother Madame Pernelle, is completely taken in by Tartuffe while the rest of the family suffers his presence. Only the faithful yet cheeky maid Dorine calls the situation what it is: an elaborate scheme by Tartuffe to defraud Orgon and his family of their estate. Tartuffe's pious charade is successful, and Orgon is so enchanted that he even offers him his daughter Marianne's hand in marriage. Like most con men, Tartuffe is barely satisfied with the riches Orgon is determined to give him and boldly attempts to seduce Elmire, Orgon's wife. Surprising twists in the final act leave the fate of the family in the hands of the hopefully merciful King.
